The air tax for solidarity and tourism promotion
La Vie éco reported on 9 November 2014 that the taxe aérienne pour la solidarité et la promotion touristique entered into force on 1 April 2. The report said it applies to any ticket issued for departure from Morocco 2. It gave the amount as 100 DH per economy ticket and 400 DH per business ticket 2.
Le360 reported on 20 January 2022 the same amounts, 100 DH for economy and 400 DH for first or business class 1. The report said travellers pay the tax on top of the ticket price 1. This site did not find the text of the law or a current official page that sets the amounts. The figures here are press reports with their dates.
Who collects it and where the money goes
Airlines collected the tax at first, according to Le360 1. Le360 reported that from 1 January 2022 the Moroccan Treasury collects the tax and then redistributes it, under the 2022 finance bill 1. The report said the change does not alter what travellers pay 1.
The revenue is split in equal halves between the Fonds d'appui à la cohésion sociale and the Office national marocain du tourisme (ONMT), according to Le360 1. La Vie éco reported a 50/50 split between ONMT and the Fonds de solidarité, and said ONMT would use its share to promote Morocco abroad 2.
Amounts collected
La Vie éco reported that about 200 MDH was collected in the first five months of the tax 2. Royal Air Maroc contributed 125 MDH of that sum, according to the same report 2. Le360 reported that Royal Air Maroc pays 80 to 85 percent of the proceeds 1. It said the tax administration of the Ministry of Economy and Finance estimated 2022 revenue at 800 MDH 1.
La Vie éco reported in 2014 that Ryanair and EasyJet had said they would leave Morocco if the tax took effect, and that the air network was not seriously disrupted 2.
Entry rules for air passengers
UK advice says visitors can stay in Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism 3. A longer stay needs an extension at a Moroccan police station 3. The passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the arrival date 3. Travellers must declare foreign currency worth 100,000 Moroccan dirham or more 3.
Visitors who need a visa can apply through the Accès Maroc portal, which handles visa and eVisa requests 4. The portal page this site opened did not show fee amounts 4.
